New England Home Family

The New England Home design blog is exactly one year old today. It has been, in retrospect, an amazingly quick year. In some ways it feels as if we’ve barely begun. But—looking through the 264 posts and 1,500-plus photos that are already online tells a very different story. It seems there have in fact been an amazing number of spaces and personalities, items and ideas shared by our staff and esteemed guest bloggers over the past twelve months. So please allow us a bit of self-indulgence: here’s a celebratory recap of favorite images from our inaugural year.

Do you have any first-year favorites you’d like to share? And please let us know how you think we’re doing as we head into year number two. Your thoughts and reflections are always very welcome.

We’ve given our guest bloggers the week off so they can enjoy their holiday and New Year’s celebrations in peace. Rather than leave faithful Tuesday readers in the lurch, though, we’re taking today’s post as an opportunity to share something special from our New England Home family.

Tria Giovan is one of the small crew of very talented people we hire to photograph homes for our magazines. But, like many energetic and creative folk, she has other facets to her life and work. One of those facets will soon be getting some extra notice.

This coming March will see the publication of Tria’s new book, fruit of a ten-year meditation on a tiny stretch of Long Island waterfront. Here’s a preview—please treat yourself to a few minutes of post-holiday quietness and soak in some of the many evocative moods a single special place can convey.

New England Home wishes you a very pleasant Memorial Day.

Our regular posting schedule will resume tomorrow, but in the meantime we bring you The Joys of Summer.

By Erin Marvin

Today was the first day of Residential Design & Construction (RDC) and Kyle Hoepner and I were at the Seaport World Trade Center bright and early to check things out.

Not surprisingly, our first stop was our very own booth which, if I do say so myself, looked pretty darn awesome. And BIG! The ever-talented Leslie Fine oversaw the booth design with furniture from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, architectural millwork by Herrick & White (fancy, right?) and high-tech electronics from our friends at Maverick Integration.

We then spent the next few hours roaming around the exhibition hall, stopping to chat with friends and fellow exhibitors such as South Shore Millwork, F.H. Perry, Stephen Terhune Woodworking, Ferguson, FBN Construction and Thoughtforms Corp. Overall, the atmosphere was extremely positive and business seems to be on the upswing.

For those of you attending RDC on Friday, be sure to stop by New England Home’s booth (#648) to pick up a copy of the magazine, attend a short DesignSherpa seminar and meet our new publisher, Kathy Bush-Dutton.

We’d like to send out a big THANK YOU, too, to all of our booth partners for creating such a wonderful space: Leslie Fine Interiors, Inc., Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Herrick & White Ltd., Maverick Integration, Nuzzo Campion Stone Enterprises, Inc., Dover Rug, Miles River Sewing, Window Imagination, Coverall Interiors and Ailanthus Ltd./Thibaut.

An unseasonably warm evening and the promise of spring brought a festive air to New England Home’s networking party last night. The New England design community was out in full force and the mood was decidedly positive. Editor-in-Chief Kyle Hoepner encouraged everyone to meet at least five new people and guests enthusiastically met the charge. Connections were made, business cards were exchanged and everyone left feeling reenergized.

Meanwhile I, as an honorary member of the NEH team for the night, really enjoyed partying with so many of my own DesignSherpa clients and friends.

The Quidley and Company gallery on Newbury Street provided a perfect backdrop for the event.  Perhaps some of the paintings created by Doug Brega, Michael Keane and Donald Jurney might just find their way into an upcoming design project?

The premium and super premium sake selections were a hit.

Guests enjoyed the fine art while sipping sake presented by Boston foodie and sake expert Richard Auffrey. Richard encouraged guests to dive into this latest drink trend and sample different sakes.  Most of us were surprised to learn some of the nuances of different sakes and left with a new appreciation for the drink.
